Why We Use EcoSoya Pillar Blend Wax

Wax is usually the least visible decision in a candle.
You notice the shape first. Then the color, the surface, the wick, maybe the packaging. The material itself tends to disappear into the finished object.
For a sculptural candle, though, wax determines almost everything you see.
It determines whether a narrow edge survives the mold, whether a curve releases cleanly, whether the surface feels smooth or inconsistent, and how the form begins to change once the candle is lit.
When we were developing LAWA, we tested different waxes before landing on EcoSoya Pillar Blend. We still use it today because it gives us the combination of structure, finish, and burn behavior we want from a candle designed to function as an object before it is ever lit.

What Is EcoSoya Pillar Blend Wax?
EcoSoya Pillar Blend is a plant-based soy wax formulated for freestanding candles rather than candles poured into containers.
That distinction matters.
A container candle has a vessel supporting the wax from every side. A pillar or sculptural candle has to support itself. Once it leaves the mold, the wax becomes the structure.
For LAWA, that means the material needs to perform very differently from a soft container wax. It needs enough rigidity for a freestanding form, it needs to release cleanly from our molds, and it needs to reproduce the details that make each shape recognizable.
EcoSoya Pillar Blend has worked particularly well for those requirements, which is why it became the foundation of our collection.
We Didn't Choose Wax From an Ingredient Checklist
When we started LAWA in 2022, finding the right wax was a process of testing rather than simply deciding that we wanted to make a soy candle.
Our candles have curves, ridges, narrow sections, deep details, and forms with very different proportions. A material can behave beautifully in one simple shape and become much more difficult when the geometry changes.
So the question wasn't only, “What do we want our candles to be made from?”
It was also, “What material lets us actually make these objects consistently?”
EcoSoya Pillar Blend gave us a surface and structure that worked with the visual direction of LAWA. The finished wax has a soft, matte quality rather than a highly glossy appearance, which became part of the way our candles look and photograph.
Over time, the material stopped feeling like an ingredient choice and started feeling like part of the design language.
For a Sculptural Candle, Wax Is a Design Material
This is probably the biggest difference between the way we think about wax and the way it is often discussed in candle making.
Wax isn't only fuel for the flame. It is the material the object is made from.
Think about a ceramic object. The clay affects the surface, weight, edges, color, and possibilities of the form. A chair changes depending on whether it is made from wood, steel, plastic, or upholstery. The material isn't separate from the design; it determines what the design can become.
Sculptural candles work the same way.
When we make a form with a pronounced ridge or a narrow curve, we need the wax to reproduce that geometry when it comes out of the mold. When we make a larger rounded form, we want the surface to remain visually consistent across a much broader area.
That is one reason we have continued using the same wax even as the LAWA collection has expanded. Once you understand how a material behaves, you can begin designing with that behavior rather than fighting against it.
The Surface Matters More When There Is No Jar
With a traditional container candle, much of the visual identity can come from the vessel: colored glass, ceramic, a label, a lid, or printed decoration.
Remove the container and suddenly the wax has nowhere to hide.
The surface of the candle becomes the surface of the product.
Small variations are also more visible, especially on simple forms. A smooth sphere can actually be less forgiving than a highly detailed candle because there is nothing to distract from the finish.
Because every LAWA candle is hand-poured, there can naturally be slight variations from piece to piece. We don't expect handmade objects to look as though they came from an injection-molding machine.
What we want is consistency without erasing the character of the process.

Then the Material Has to Do Something Completely Different
This is what makes candle design unusual.
You spend all this time asking the wax to hold a precise shape, and then you put a flame on top of it.
Once a sculptural candle is lit, the material begins moving. Edges soften. A melt pool develops. Wax may travel down the exterior of the form. A candle that began perfectly symmetrical can gradually become completely asymmetrical.
We don't see that transformation as the design failing.
It is the second part of the design.
Some LAWA forms develop pronounced drips. Others soften much more gradually. The exact result depends on the geometry of the candle, the wick, the length of the burn session, drafts, room conditions, and how the candle has been burned previously.
That means two identical candles can eventually become two slightly different objects.
We like that.
The material begins by doing one job—holding the form—and eventually starts doing another—allowing the form to change.
Why Our Candles Are Unscented
Our retail collection is also unscented by design.
That decision is primarily about the role we want the candle to play in a room. LAWA began with form rather than fragrance, and we wanted the visual object to remain the focus.
It also simplifies the material system. We are not asking the wax to carry a fragrance identity on top of everything else it needs to do structurally.
For us, the wax, shape, color, cotton wick, and eventual flame are enough.
That doesn't mean scented candles are somehow the wrong way to make a candle. They are simply solving a different design problem.
A fragrance-led candle is partly about what it releases into the room. LAWA's retail candles are primarily about what the object brings to the room visually.
Is Soy Wax Better Than Paraffin?
We wouldn't reduce the decision to that.
Different waxes have different characteristics, and the right material depends partly on what you are trying to make.
Paraffin has been used in candle making for a very long time and can offer strong fragrance performance, consistent manufacturing characteristics, and versatility across many candle formats. Soy-based waxes appeal to many makers because they are plant-derived and can offer different aesthetic and performance characteristics depending on the formulation.
For LAWA, the decision was not about declaring every soy candle better than every paraffin candle.
We chose EcoSoya Pillar Blend because it works for our product: freestanding sculptural forms with a matte visual language, an unscented retail concept, and a production process built around hand-pouring.
That is a much more useful standard for evaluating a material than choosing one simply because its category sounds better on a label.
How You Burn It Still Matters
The wax can only do part of the work. How a pillar candle is burned has a significant effect on what happens next.
Wick length, drafts, the surface underneath the candle, and the length of each burn session can all influence the flame, melt pool, dripping, and way the sculpture changes over time.
We recommend trimming the wick to approximately 1/4 inch before lighting and always placing a freestanding candle on a heat-resistant surface that can catch melted wax.

The Material Choice Extends Beyond the Candle
Choosing a plant-based wax also influenced how we thought about the materials surrounding the product.
We didn't want to spend time considering what the candle itself was made from and then automatically wrap the finished object in layers of plastic and foam.
That led us toward a paper-based, plastic-free retail packaging system designed to protect the sculptural forms during shipping without creating unnecessary material around them.
The candle and its packaging solve different problems, but we think they should come from the same way of thinking: choose materials intentionally, use what the product actually needs, and avoid adding something simply because it is conventional.

Why We Still Use EcoSoya Pillar Blend
After years of making candles, we could probably find a cheaper wax.
That isn't a particularly compelling reason to change one of the fundamental materials of the product.
We know how EcoSoya Pillar Blend behaves in our molds. We know how our colors look in it. We know the surface it creates, how our forms release, and how the material responds as the candles are burned.
That familiarity has value.
When a material becomes part of the visual identity and production language of a product, changing it isn't simply a sourcing decision. It changes the object.
We didn't choose EcoSoya because we wanted “soy wax” to become the story of LAWA. We chose it because it helps us make the objects we wanted LAWA to be known for.
