Why We Use EcoSoya Pillar Blend Wax

The best materials tend to be the ones nobody mentions. The cotton in a good shirt. The clay in a well-thrown bowl. The wax in a candle that holds its shape three weeks after you bought it. At LAWA, the material is worth mentioning.
We use EcoSoya Pillar Blend — a premium plant-based soy wax imported from England, formulated specifically for pillar and sculptural candles. It is not the cheapest option. It is the right one.
The problem with paraffin
Paraffin wax has had a long, useful life. It has lit homes for over a century and remains the dominant wax in mass-market candles. It is also a petroleum byproduct — derived from the residue of crude oil refining.
When paraffin burns, it produces more soot and combustion byproducts than plant-based alternatives. In a small room over several hours, this is measurable. It is also why paraffin candles often leave black marks on walls and ceilings over time. Soy wax candles burn significantly cleaner.
What EcoSoya Pillar Blend is
EcoSoya Pillar Blend is manufactured in England and is one of the most technically refined soy waxes available. It is formulated with three specific properties in mind: rigidity at room temperature, clean mold release, and a smooth, consistent surface finish.
These are not incidental qualities. They are what make sculptural candles possible. A wax that is too soft will not hold a sharp edge. A wax with poor mold release will crack or deform when pulled from the mold. A wax with an inconsistent surface finish will show imperfections in forms designed to be seen as objects.
EcoSoya Pillar Blend does all three things well. It is a 100% soy candle wax — plant-based, renewable, and biodegradable.
Wax as a design material
Most candle makers choose a wax based on cost and availability. We chose ours based on what it allows us to make. The forms LAWA produces — the Bell, the Spiral Spire, the Knot Ball, the Cascading Wave — require a wax that behaves predictably across varying thicknesses and geometries.
EcoSoya Pillar Blend does this. The result is sculptural candles that hold their edge from production through the full burn — melting slowly and organically rather than collapsing.
How it burns
Soy wax burns at a lower temperature than paraffin — roughly 120°F versus 150°F. This cooler burn has two effects: the wax pool forms more slowly and evenly, and the candle lasts longer. A LAWA candle burned in two-hour sessions will retain its sculptural form significantly longer than a comparable paraffin piece.
Because LAWA candles are 100% unscented, there are no fragrance compounds to affect the burn quality. The result is one of the cleanest burning candles available — the flame steady, the pool clear, the wax doing exactly what it is designed to do.
Every LAWA candle is made from EcoSoya Pillar Blend, imported from England. Unscented. Handmade in Los Angeles.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is EcoSoya Pillar Blend wax?
EcoSoya Pillar Blend is a premium plant-based soy wax manufactured in England, formulated specifically for pillar and sculptural candles. It offers exceptional rigidity, clean mold release, and a smooth surface finish — properties that make complex sculptural forms possible.
Is soy wax better than paraffin?
Soy wax burns cleaner, at a lower temperature, and lasts longer than paraffin. It is plant-based and biodegradable. Paraffin is a petroleum byproduct that produces more soot when burned. For sculptural candles, soy wax also holds form better due to its rigidity at room temperature.
Are LAWA candles eco friendly?
Yes — LAWA uses EcoSoya Pillar Blend, a 100% plant-based soy wax. All packaging is biodegradable. LAWA is one of the first candle brands to eliminate plastic from packaging entirely.
Why do soy candles burn longer?
Soy wax burns at a lower temperature than paraffin, which means it melts more slowly and the wax pool forms more gradually. This results in a longer overall burn time for the same volume of wax.
