Why Biodegradable Packaging Is Part of the Design

Packaging is usually an afterthought. The product is designed first; the box is designed to fit it. What goes into the box is considered. What surrounds it, less so.
At LAWA, we made the packaging a design decision from the beginning. We are one of the first candle brands to eliminate plastic from packaging entirely. This is not a marketing position. It is a consistency requirement.
The box is the first impression
Before anyone sees the candle, they see the box. The weight of it in their hands, the way it opens, what it smells like when they lift the lid. The unboxing experience is the first moment of contact between the object and the person who will live with it.
For a brand that makes handmade candles in Los Angeles from premium materials, a box made of plastic or wrapped in synthetic foam would be a contradiction. The packaging would announce something different from what the candle is.
A deliberate decision
Biodegradable packaging requires more consideration than its alternative. The materials are more expensive. Some formats are structurally more complex. The supply chain is narrower.
We made this choice because a brand that imports premium soy wax from England, uses cotton wicks, and handmakes every piece in Los Angeles cannot credibly wrap the result in plastic. Consistency matters. What you throw away says something about what you believe.
LAWA's packaging is 100% biodegradable — no plastic, no synthetic materials. This is one of the things we are most proud of, and one of the things our customers notice.
Material integrity
The connection between the wax and the box is not incidental. Both are plant-based. Both are made to decompose rather than persist. The eco friendly candle inside and the packaging around it are expressions of the same set of values: that what we make should not outlast its usefulness.
Sustainable candles are sometimes treated as a category — a type of candle, like scented or pillar. For us, it is not a category. It is a baseline.
Every LAWA candle ships in 100% biodegradable packaging. Handmade in Los Angeles from EcoSoya Pillar Blend wax.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is biodegradable candle packaging?
Biodegradable candle packaging uses materials that break down naturally — recycled cardboard, paper tissue, plant-based inks, and natural fillers instead of plastic, foam, or synthetic wrap. LAWA eliminated plastic from packaging entirely.
Are LAWA candles sustainable?
Yes. LAWA uses EcoSoya Pillar Blend soy wax (plant-based), cotton wicks, and 100% biodegradable packaging with no plastic. LAWA was one of the first candle brands to achieve fully plastic-free packaging.
Why does candle packaging matter for the environment?
Most candle packaging includes plastic wrap, plastic windows, or synthetic foam inserts that are not recyclable. Switching to biodegradable alternatives eliminates this waste stream entirely. For a brand that sells hundreds of candles, this makes a measurable difference.
Do LAWA candles make good gifts?
LAWA candles ship in considered biodegradable packaging designed to be part of the experience. The unboxing reflects the quality of the object inside — no plastic, no filler, just the candle presented well.
