Why Wax Choice Matters: The Truth Behind Your Candle’s Burn

Why Wax Choice Matters: The Truth Behind Your Candle’s Burn

Have you ever wondered why some candles burn clean while others leave behind soot or even a strange smell?  The secret lies in the wax. Not all waxes are created equal, and choosing the right one can make a big difference in your candle experience.

Soy Wax (LAWA’s Choice)

At LAWA Candles, we use 100% pure soy wax, and for good reason. Soy is a sustainable, clean-burning wax that produces minimal soot and is non-toxic—so you can breathe easy while enjoying the flicker of your candle. Plus, it’s often blended for pillar candles to ensure the perfect balance of firmness and burn performance. It’s our top choice for a reason: clean, safe, and eco-friendly.

Paraffin Wax

Paraffin wax is a common choice in many candles, but it's petroleum-based and can release toxic chemicals when burned, including soot that can contribute to indoor air pollution. While it’s known for its strong fragrance throw, the toxins released make it a less-than-ideal option for your health.

Beeswax

Beeswax is a natural wax with its own perks—long-burning and naturally air-purifying. It has a subtle honey aroma that adds a premium touch to your candle. But it’s a more expensive option and may not always be practical for all candle styles, especially larger or pillar candles.

Palm Wax

Known for its hard texture, palm wax burns cleanly and holds its shape well, making it great for pillar candles. However, there are ethical concerns surrounding its production, as palm farming can contribute to deforestation and harm ecosystems.

Blended Waxes

Many candlemakers blend waxes to achieve optimal performance. For example, mixing soy + coconut or soy + palm helps improve burn time, scent throw, and texture. It’s all about finding the right combination to enhance your candle experience, and that’s something we take seriously.
